Communication

Communication

Most of us think of communication as a way to get a thought or idea across to another. In reality, however, communication is a basic life skill - educating yourself on proper communication is just as important as  the education which you helps you live your dream. How you communicate will help to determine how happy you will be. Why? Because when you communicate properly, you make friends and maintain relationships. You are a valued individual who is worthy of trust and respect. Effectively communicating just makes things simpler.

How do you become an effective communicator? Practice! Practice! Practice!

Are you an active listener? Good communicators take the time to really listen before they speak.

How do you express your thoughts? Good communication means giving and  relaying the whole message. Discussing feelings and desires.  Giving accurate and precise feedback about observations.

Is your body language saying what you want it to say? 93% of all body language is nonverbal, 38% is considered to be paralanguage - volume, pitch, tone, and rhythm and 55% is made up of body movement. Body language is almost always more believable than verbal communication.  The key is to be congruent. Make sure your gestures and body movements agree with your words.

Do you fight fair? Do you say what you mean and mean what you say? Good communicators share open discussions without shouting or violence. They discuss the topic at hand and do not use phrases such as "you ALWAYS... you NEVER...". A good communicator can end a disagreement with a mutually agreeable solution.

TIP: effective communication is making others comfortable in their own skin. Breaking down the walls between us. How do we do that? One way is to become like them. Mirror them. Take a few minutes and watch them and get a feel for their mannerisms or more simply put, listen to how their body talks and then slowly begin to do the same things they do.
